Munching on cherries is my current addiction. I feel summer fruits are so colourful – mangoes, litchis and cherries are my pick of the season.

Fun fact : Do you know why you get cherries with the stalk on?

Because the stalks act as quality index for the consumer. The stems indicate when they’ve been picked: if they’re fresh and green, they were harvested close to when you’re buying them. If they’re dry and brown, they were harvested a little while ago.

Cherries do not just look good and taste yummy, they have amazing nutritional value. Some of those benefits are:

  1. Promotes better sleep : Cherries contain melatonin which helps cure Insomnia and regulate sleep cycle. **Tip: It is also suggested for overcoming jet lag.**
  2. Protects Against Diabetes : Cherries have low glycemic index which makes them a better snack than many other fruits, especially for diabetics.
  3. Helps Regulate Blood Pressure : Cherries are very high in potassium, which helps regulate heart rate and blood pressure and reduces the risk of hypertension. The phytosterols in cherries help reduce bad cholesterol levels.
  4. Multivitamin Dose : Cherries are a good source of vitamin A, B, C & E which means a little cherry treat is sufficient for the multivitamin dosage needed by the body to keep the skin radiant and healthy. These vitamins are good for the brain too. **Becoming a beauty with brains won’t hurt anyone, eh?**
  5. Reduces Risk of Stroke : A cherry enriched diet can greatly reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol and easing inflammation.

As for storing, cherries like to be cold, so store them in the fridge. Kept cold and dry (don’t wash them before storing), they’ll keep for up to two weeks, possibly more. But who lets cherries sit uneaten for that long?

Lets-Chat

PS : Cherries are not only healthy, but they are delicious and versatile. You can juice it up, bake a tart or munch it raw 😉 Also, you can dry it out and blitz it to make a homemade scrub. Let me know how you like to have cherries in your comments. Would love to hear them.

Until next time,
